Ministry in Japan

Dear Friends,

Most often in this newsletter, we focus on a Covenant Players unit serving in Europe.  However, in light of the recent news from Japan, we want to focus on our Pacific Gate Unit (Unit Leaders Kurt and Cathy Purucker and Iris Scott), which covers Japan, Guam, and Hawaii.

In a recent letter, Kurt wrote of a busy week of ministry in Japan: “...we had three services on Sunday. Next, we had three programs at a high school on Tuesday, a ‘PR’ spot that afternoon, and a program with the AWANA group that evening.

“There were three more school programs on Wednesday at an elementary school, an afternoon drama workshop and a Sr. High youth program to finish off the day.

“On Thursday morning, we shared at a different base for a PWOC program and again concluding with youth, Jr High this time. On Friday, we only did one program, an evening at a servicemen’s center. Other than the Thursday morning event, all of these performances were with Yokosuka Naval Base, sponsored by the chapel.

“It was crazy busy, and, I’m sure, more work for the chapel staff, but I think everyone really appreciated what we were able to do for the community….

“Sixteen programs, 20 new plays to this mission’s repertoire and quite a few calories burned! Now that’s the way to spend a week.”

The Pacific Gate Unit were fortunate enough to leave Japan only hours before the quake. As of the early morning hours (12:57 am Pacific Standard Time) the unit  had landed in Guam and was able to reach higher ground before the predicted tsunamis.

Please continue to pray for their safety. We also solicit your prayers for those directly hit by the earthquake and tsunami.

Covenant Players has been actively ministering in Japan since 1972 and we have many hosts and supporters there.

Please pray for their safety. While the Pacific Gate Unit has left Japan, they do plan to return to Okinawa in April.

With the plays — and the messages of hope, renewal, Christian service, and faith in times of trouble — we know there will be many more opportunities to share Christ in the upcoming months.

While you may not be able to serve on this unit, we do need people to serve on various units worldwide.  Please contact us today to talk about YOUR vision, and YOUR call to serve Christ in HIS world.  We look forward to hearing from you!
